Important role of stratosphere-troposphere coupling in the Arctic mid-to-upper tropospheric warming in response to sea-ice loss

چکیده

Abstract Recent studies have suggested that deep Arctic warming, extending from the surface to upper troposphere, could trigger mid-latitude atmospheric circulation changes, while shallow confined in lowermost induces comparatively weak remote responses. The causes of mid-to-upper tropospheric warming are less clear compared with near-surface warming. Here, we demonstrate a new dynamical mechanism responsible for polar associated sea-ice loss, using both reanalysis and model simulations. Barents-Kara loss enhances upward propagating waves, leading wave convergence anomalies sub-polar lower stratosphere troposphere. consequent eddy feedback leads clockwise residual overturning middle accompanied by anomalous descent adiabatic essential role stratosphere-troposphere coupling induced is confirmed simulations stratospheric variability suppressed, which only troposphere warmed response loss. Our results suggest considerable part observed caused plays major role.

The Role of Ocean–Atmosphere Coupling in the Zonal-Mean Atmospheric Response to Arctic Sea Ice Loss

The role of ocean–atmosphere coupling in the zonal-mean climate response to projected late twenty-firstcentury Arctic sea ice loss is investigated using Community Climate System Model version 4 (CCSM4) at 18 spatial resolution. Parallel experiments with different ocean model configurations (full-depth, slab, and no interactive ocean) allow the roles of dynamical and thermodynamic ocean feedback...

Loss of sea ice in the Arctic.

The Arctic sea ice cover is in decline. The areal extent of the ice cover has been decreasing for the past few decades at an accelerating rate. Evidence also points to a decrease in sea ice thickness and a reduction in the amount of thicker perennial sea ice. A general global warming trend has made the ice cover more vulnerable to natural fluctuations in atmospheric and oceanic forcing. The obs...
